Canister Fuel Stoves

Canister Fuel Stoves

If you do lots of backpacking, lets get one thing straight, a canister fuel stove (or one that uses pre-filled canisters of propane/butane) are not the best of choices. You are better off with a MSR Liquid Fuel Stove instead. Read our Backpacking Stoves Guide for more information about the pros/cons of each type of stove.

Now, that said, canister stoves DO have their place. These stoves are ideal for someone who needs a portable stove that will be used mainly for car camping but also the occasional night or two spent in the backcountry. You see, canister stoves ARE easier to use and in many ways more convenient than their liquid fuel cousins. And if you will only use it a night or two in the backcountry, the limitations of canister stoves won't really apply to you.

Just keep in mind that canister stoves DO come with a increased cost of ownership - the fuel bottles for these things run about $4 to $5 a pop - and they are good for only 10 or so meals. Moreover, you always have to make sure you have enough of them on hand, since the replacement fuel canisters are not found at your local drug store.
