About the Online Photo Gallery

The user-submitted online photo gallery at Big Sky Fishing is a feature added to the site in November 2004. It is different from the sites own photo gallery which shows my own pictures I've taken of Montana (see this link). Instead, this new feature allows users to upload either their own photos they have taken of Montana or any scenic web cam images that they have come across while suring the many Montana web cams. The pictures that the user uploads will then appear immediately in this new online photo gallery.

Use of this new user-submitted online photo gallery is completely free, too.

Purpose of the User-Submitted Online Photo Gallery

The online user-submitted photo gallery has two purposes. And, as such, it is divided into two parts.

The first purpose is to allow visitors to upload their own photographs they have taken of Montana. As the pictures, once uploaded, will be able to be seen online immediately, the user can email friends, family and anyone else the links to the photographs. Thus, it makes for an easy way to put your own collection of Montana photographs online for all to see - and for free, too.

The second purpose of the online user-submitted photo gallery is to capture scenic Montana web cam views. One of the most popular pages on Big Sky Fishing has been the Montana Web Cam page, much to my surprise. Since many Montana web cams (particularly in Glacier, Yellowstone and Teton parks) provide outstanding views, this gallery functions as a way for users to "permanently record" these scenic images from various web cams that they come across. To record these images, all the user must do is to save the web cam image to their own computer, then upload the image into the appropriate category of the online photo gallery. The scenic pictures will then be available for all to see for a long, long time.

User Guidelines

Using the new user-submitted photo gallery is quite simple. If you just want to browse the user-submitted photo gallery, just go to the gallery page and start browsing.

If you wish to upload any images to the gallery, first you have to register. Once you register (I don't use or sell or give out any of the required registeration information - it is there to prevent the "spam bots" from posting unauthorized photos or links to other sites), you can begin uploading photos to whatever category in the gallery that you wish. Which gallery you upload a photo too depends on the type of photograph it is. This is outlined below.

Also, if you have problems registering or uploading photos, please read this thread in the forum for a bug I've found.

Montana Web Cam Images

If the photo you want to upload to the online gallery is a picture taken from one of the many web cameras in Montana, you upload them into the category called "Montana Web Cam Gallery." This gallery contains a number of sub-categories to help organize the photographs. Thus, if you wish to upload a scenic shot of Glacier National Park that you found on one of Glacier's web cameras (such as the Lake McDonald Cam), upload the picture into the Glacier National Park Gallery.

How to Save a Web Cam Picture from a Web Site

To Save a Web Cam Image from a site, use your mouse and put the pointer over the picture. Then right-click over the image. This will bring up a menu-bar of options. Click on the option that says "Save Picture As." Save the image - giving it a name that makes sense - to your computers desktop.

Note : Some web sites have the "right click" function of your mouse disabled, preventing you from saving an image. In these cases, there isn't much you can do to save the image beyond doing a screen shot.

How to Upload a Photo to the Photo Gallery

Once the image has been saved to your desktop, just go to the online photo gallery, log-in and upload the picture using the "upload photos" link. After you press the "upload photos" link, you'll be asked for a name and description of the photo. Please type in some information here - such as "web cam view of Lake McDonald". The reason for this is that it allows users to search and find specific photos.

From there, just follow the instructions. You are done when you see the rather mis-leading message that says "no more photos to upload." When you see this, just click on the link to be taken back to the photo gallery where you can view the photo you just uploaded.

Upload Your Own Pictures of Montana

If you wish to upload your own pictures you have taken of Montana, you can upload them into the gallery under the category labeled "Your Montana Photos." Once again, this castegory has a number of sub-categories, depending on the type and location of the picture you have taken. Just select the proper sub-category, upload the photo and your picture will appear in the gallery immediately for all to see. Follow the instructions, above, for how to upload your own photos.

Relation of the Photo Gallery to the Forum at Big Sky Fishing

The online photo gallery has been "imbedded" inside the forum that Big Sky Fishign now uses. This was down so as to allow for one single registration process. Once you register with the forum, you will not have to register again to post pictures. Additionally, this allows the online photo gallery to have the same look and feel as the forum does.
