Tall Mountains, Red Rock and Open Fields
As the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway drops down on the eastern side of Dead Indian Pass, the terrain changes dramatically. From thick forests at the pass, the forests give way to open fields of grass, which in turn give way to the desert as the road continues to lose elevation. At the eastern starting point of the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (north of Cody), the landscape is all desert.
