This part of the Loop Trail burned pretty hot and severe during the Trapper Creek Fire of 2003. As such, in 2004, while ground cover was beginning to make a comback, things were still a bit bare in comparison to what you find further up the trail towards Granite Park Chalet. To be truthful, the amount of ground cover that existed surprised me, as the area around the "Loop" on the Going to the Sun Road (this photo was taken just a few hundred yards from the trailhead) was really burnt over, and I didn't expect to see new growth until beginning later in 2005. Yet, Nature is full of surprises.
