This map illustrates
how comparatively little forest cover Montana has. Actually, compared
to other western states, Montana has quite a bit of forest cover.
However, due to the huge size of the Montana prairie, much of the
state is essentially treeless. In most areas of eastern and central
Montana, most of the forested areas will either be found right
along the rivers or on high, isolated large hills and small mountain
peaks. The most forested area of Montana is in the higher mountains
and in NW Montana (where the most precipitation falls). |
