Abandoned grain
elevators are one of the most common sites in the plains of central
and eastern Montana. While you can see abandoned elevators pretty
much anywhere, you'll see more than most in central Montana. The
reason for this is that these grain elevators were highly dependant
on the railroad to move their goods. When the Milwaukee Road folded
up operations many years ago, these remote grain elevators were
left without any sort of economical way to move the grain. As such,
many small towns in Montana that are along the old Milwaukee Road
right of way have abandoned grain elevators in town. |
