Winter Boots Checklist
Need a Snow Boot or Winter Boot? There's a big diffrence between the two, so know the difference. Unsure what I mean...then read the Snow Boots vs. Winter Boots page. |
Style or Substance? For pure yucky weather and wandering around in deep snow...you want a true snow boot, and to heck with style. But for a general "winter boot" for use in the cities, etc...there's nothing wrong with springing for style. |
Want Cold Feet? Then Use a Cotton Sock! The greatest winter/snow boot in the world won't keep your feet warm if you use a cotton sock. For winter use, you absolutely, positively want to use a winter sock (such as Smartwool Socks). Unsure why? Read the Guide to Winter Socks and the article How to Keep Your Feet Warm. |
Dry Feet = Warm Feet. This applies both to the sock (a cotton sock makes and keeps you foot wet), as well as the boot itself. For a winter boot that expects to see nasty weather, getting a boot that isn't waterproof is down right stupid! |
How High of a Boot? Many boots, especially women's boots, can be very tall. While the height of the boot is partially about personal preference, for all-around winter "wanderings" in nasty weather, you want a boot that is quite a bit taller than the ankle...yet you don't want up to the knee, either. Most Sorel boots are the ideal height for winter uses. |
Don't Forget the Winter Sock! Just a reminder that your fancy winter boot won't keep you warm if you use a cotton sock. Use a Winter Sock instead. |
If You'll Get Your Boots Dirty...Then make sure you get a boot that is easy to clean. Some brands of winter boots (such as Ugg Boots), aren't especially easy to clean. Rubber bottom boots such as Sorel's are simple to clean, but other winter-style boots are easy to clean, too. |
