Blame the Coast Guard. Montana tried to make it easy on us with permanent registration on boats and boat trailers. It is a USCG requirement that all boats on Federal waterways be inspected at a minimum of every 3 years. They (the USCG) consider registration a form of personal inspection and there for require the validation sticker every 3 years.

It is used to keep old boats off the water if they have not been used and or inspected by a knowledgeable party in over 3 years. They are just trying to save lives.

It is really a simple process. Call, fill out the form online, or go into your local FWP with your boat title or registration to get the validation. Did mine in February and had it before the old sticker expired.
