Default First Glacier NP hike

Hi all- I was given 2 weeks off and decided to make the leap and do a more adventurous backcountry hike in Glacier NP. The only issue is that the 2 weeks is from April 21st to May 7th. After some lengthy research, I've learned that late April and May pose for some unpredictable weather in the backcountry. So now I am asking for advice as to whether I should attempt a 3-4 day hike during that time off or is it too risky/dangerous. I have the gear to do winter hiking/camping but I'm not sure what to expect for temp and snow amounts. I haven't planned a route yet but am open to any recommendations from resident hikers.

thanks a lot---dave k

Hi Dave,

April is a iffy time for backcountry hiking. Not necessarily because of horribly cold weather...although that can happen. It is more because the ground still likely will have a solid snow pack...making hiking difficult to impossible.

By late April there "may" be some very low elevation trails open and snow-free somewhere in the park...but certainly don't count on it. Usually GNP tries to get the road to Many Glacier open in late April, but all other roads are likely to be closed due to snow still being on them. This lack of road access will limit where you can go hiking.

That all said, if you don't mind hiking in the snow (you have skis/snowshoes/etc..), I actually think late April and May would be a good time to be out. Days are long. Weather will likely be mild unless you get unlucky and have a nasty storm come in. Just watch out for avalanches on the steep slopes.

Jim
