Trekking Pole Checklist

Get a Collapsible Pole : Collapsible poles allow you to pack it in your pack, suitcase, where-ever. They cost just a few dollars more but are worth every penny.
Need One or Two? Most people find they only need one pole, not two. And for general all-around hiking, that should be all you really need. Climbing (in snow fields and such), is a different story, though.
Why Do I Need a Pole? Balance, prevention of leg injuries, reduction of weight on your shoulders, reduced strain on the knees, pacing. Need I say more?
I'll Look Like a Dork! So?
Has Other Uses Too : Having a strong aluminum pole in the woods often comes in handy, such as a mono-pod, beating stick, weapon, back-scratcher, and many other creative uses. Read the book "Sex in the Tent" for some ideas.
