I like the new Apgar Cam, but you do know that most of the trees down in the valley below are dead, don't you? A succession of fires has burnt the hell out of that area...the Moose Fire and the Robert Fire in particular.

Yes, Very disturbing since I didn't ever see this area before the fire two years ago as I recall. It is devestating to see such immense destruction of nature. I would much rather look at a green tree than a burned one any day of the week.
The trees down on the lake's edge show how the fall seasonal Tamarack scene looked like before the fire. So in another 50-75 years the area will have returned to the pristine stae it was once. That's beyond my lifetime unless I live to be 105.
I see the same destruction down here in Phoenix when a fire gets going in the desert. Some unapreciative or irresponsible people shoot at the saguaro to see what effect it has and try to shoot through the trunk to cut it down. Some plants survive well enough to edge out death but it takes many years before they come back if at all. The stately Saguaros are particularly damagedt by fire and human vandalism. They take up to 50-75 years before they even begin to branch arms. Seems a shame to have them disappear like that when they have managed to grow in such a hostile waterless environment.
End of soapbox!
