It blended in so well I came within one step of this speckled rattlesnake (it didn't rattle or strike out) while out for my saturday morning walk near the house. (Phoenix, AZ)

Stepping on this sucker would have ruined your day. Weird that it didn't make a rattle...must have been sunning itself to warm up.

Yep, Sun was just hitting it just over the edge of the rock it was leaning against. Could have reached down and picked it up it looked so calm. First reaction said NO just back up a step. Ive had this happen before when walking by a rattler that didnt rattle until I had already waked by. Kinda like the snake was saying, Coulda Gotcha that time bud.

LOL...Probably a good first reaction to take a step or two back. I haven't seen a rattler in ages, except for smushed ones on the road, particularly south of Missoula. I don't miss them. Besides, I've had enough death-defying encounters with Bears. And I'll take the Bears over the snakes anyday.

I wonder how long this rattler was? Judging by it's thickness...this is one big snake.

Ah HA the magic of photography. This coil was really a tidy 7-8 inches, about 2 inches in diameter maybe 3- 3.5 feet long. Big enough to leave a mark. Not the largest or most poisonous rattler I've met in my adventures. Mohave's ( green colored beauties) are small but pack a neurotoxic venom punch in addition to the normal stuff. Only seen a couple of those.

Bears... whats a bear? Some burly furry carnivore with big teeth and claws as I recall. I'll stick with snakes for now. Least till we move to Thompson Falls.
