Fly Lines Checklist

Match the Fly Line Weight With Your Equipment! Always use a fly line weight that matches your fly reel and fly rod. Thus, if you have a 4-wt. fly reel and a 4-wt. fly rod, be sure to get a 4 wt. fly line. For more information read Understanding Fly Line Weights.
Understand Fly Line Codes : If you don't understand the fly line code, it's inevitable you'll get the wrong type of fly line for your needs. See example below to understand the codes!
Example of Fly Line Code : WF-5-F. What this means is that the fly line has a Weight Forward Taper, a Fly Line Weight of 5, and Floats. Read more about fly line codes.
Trout Fish? Can only afford one fly line? Then get a floating fly line, not a sinking or sink-tip one. You can always "convert" a floating fly line into a partial sinking one through the use of weights.
About Fly Line Color : Get a fly line color that YOU can see. The fish will see the fly line regardless of the color. Read more about fly line color.
That Pesky Fly Line Taper : Fly line taper refers to how the line has been modified to allow for easier casting. The "weight-forward taper" is by far the most popular taper, and also the most effective for general fly-fishing uses. Read more about fly line taper.
