Fly Assortments Checklist

Don't Buy an Assortment If...You only need a couple of flies included in the assortment. It's a waste of money. On the other hand...
Fly Assortments Provide Great Value If...They come with the flies you actually need and think you'll use. This is especially true since many assortments come with a "slimmed down" fly box, too.
Fly Assortments Are Handy. If you only fish occasionally, or just fish periodically for a particular species (like Bass), then a fly assortment provides an excellent way to acquire the basic flies.
Mixed, Dry, Nymph or Species Specific? For trout fishing, especially if you currently do not have a large selection of flies, it makes sense to get a "trout specific" fly assortment. With that, you can find which flies work best for you...and then buy those flies separately in the future. If you do not currently own a lot of flies, it is kind of a waste of money to buy ten fly assortments at the very beginning.
