Orvis Fly Rods

Orvis Fly Rods

Orvis has superb fly rods. I love Orvis fly rods. They work superbly, just feel right to use and are built to last. Best of all, their fly rods - even their high quality rods - are reasonably priced. Additionally, many of their fly rods have a 25 year guarantee on them - no matter how your break it, Orvis will replace it.

Also, if you do decide to get a Orvis rod, considering mating it up with a Battenkill fly reel - which costs less than $90. An Orvis rod and a Battenkill reel are a tough combination to beat in a reasonably priced fly rod/fly reel combination.

Orvis Series of Fly Rods

Orvis TLS Fly Rods

Orvis TLS Fly Rods - A powerful, lightweight yet somewhat forgiving rod. Probably the most versatile freshwater rod Orvis has.

Orvis Frequent Flyer Travel Rods - As the name suggests, this series is designed for people who spend too much time traveling by plane. These rods are also ideal for backcountry travelers.

Orvis Bamboo Fly Rods

Orvis Bamboo Fly Rods - Orvis is one of the few places an angler can still find handmade bamboo fly rods.

  • Full-flex.
  • 2-piece.
  • Line weight : 4-5
  • Ideal uses : Designed for anglers wanting the full-flex, slow-action of traditional bamboo fly rods. For small-stream fishing where longer casts are not needed.

Orvis Streamline Fly Rods

Orvis Streamline Fly Rods - The budget fly rod from Orvis. A good fly rod for beginners unsure if they'll enjoy the sport or for children. Anglers will find longer-lasting value in the Clearwater Series of fly rods, which aren't that much more expensive.

New Angler? Where to Start?

Orvis has an extensive selection of fly rods available. This is good...unless you have no idea on where to start. With some luck, the table below should give new anglers in search of a fly rod an idea on where to start. New anglers should avoid Orvis Bamboo fly rods and T3 series fly rods, as they are more difficult to cast.

For all-around trout fishing, on rivers of all sizes, in a wide variety of conditons, then the Orvis TLS fly rod and the Orvis Helio Series are both excellent choices. Get a rod weight between 3-6 (depending on what you fish for, where you do it and your own personal preferences).

For fishing smaller waters primarily, the Orvis Superfine Series is the ideal choice. This full-flex fly rod is a joy to cast in tight, small-stream conditions.

For the new angler on a tight budget, go with the Clearwater Series fly rods. Yes, it's more expensive than the Streamline Series. But the rod is much better. The Streamline Series is designed for the angler who may not remain in the sport for long and for children.

Spend too much time in airplanes? Well, if that's you, then the Frequent Flyer series might have your name on it. Just remember, a four-piece fly rod also breaks down into a fairly small package that is suitable for air travel, too (although it won't fit in a carry-on).
