3-Season Goose Down Sleeping Bags

I'll be upfront. I'm not the biggest of fans of goose down sleeping bags. The reason? Mainly, whenever I camp - particularly in the backcountry or above all on a float trip - I live in mortal fear of getting my sleeping bag wet. And a goose down sleeping bag, once wet, is entirely useless and takes literally forever to dry.

For this reason, if you will be doing backcountry activities that run the risk of getting your sleeping bag wet - and especially if you take river float trips - do NOT get a goose down sleeping bag.

However, if you don't have a high risk of getting your bag wet, I'll be the first to admit a goose down sleeping bag is the "premiere" of bags. They are the warmest of sleeping bags available - and are often incredibly soft if made from good down. And lastly, goose down bags pack up remarkably compact - far more so than synthetic bags do. Oh, almost forgot, there is also the weight issue. Goose down sleeping bags are typically 20-30% lighter than a synthetic bag with the same features and temperature rating.

In essence, if you have no worries about a wet sleeping bag, then goose down is for you - especially if you need an ultra-light and ultra-portable bag. Otherwise, my recommendation is to stick with a synthetic sleeping bag. And if you are unsure of what brand of sleeping bag to get, consider getting a North Face Sleeping Bag. I've been very happy with mine.
