The North Face Talus 4 Tent: 4-Person 3-Season

Product Details

When the whole family is ready to hit the trail but the youngsters aren't quite ready to lug their own tents around, The North Face Talus 4 Four-Person Three-Season Tent is ready to pick up the slack. At under seven pounds, putting in squarely in the "superlight" category, you wouldn't think the Talus is a spacious, family-friendly shelter, but it's designed to be equally at home car-camping as it is heading out on the trail for days at a time. Both the fly and floor are coated with waterproof polyurethane and fully taped, and there are polyester mesh panels on the canopy to let air in and let you look at the stars when the weather's nice. The Talus also uses The North Face's High-Low ventilation system, which has a vent to keep air moving even when the fly's on, and a gear loft and footprint are included to make life on the trail, or next to the car, that much easier. As a final touch, there's an external Gear Locker that provides plenty of space for wet, muddy gear, so your sleeping space can stay clean and comfortable until it's time to head back home.

Large Tents Checklist

Cabin vs. Large Dome Tent. What to choose? Cabin tents tend to be larger and usually have one or more "rooms." However, large dome tents are not as heavy or bulky, and usually are easier to setup. If you do NOT need the extra rooms, I'd suggest considering a large dome tent.
Waterproof? Any tent worth's it's name better be waterproof on the bottom AND have a waterproof rain-fly. Why? Sleep in it once during the rain and you won't need to ask.
Many Cabin Tents Are NOT Freestanding. Unlike large dome tents, many cabin tents require many stakes and lots of rope to erect. Keep this in mind when shoppng around for one. Most tents shown on this site, however, are freestanding.
How Tall? If you are going to get a big tent, it makes little sense to get one that is "squat." Thus, for big tents, it's always better to get a tent that is comfortable...and comfortable means one that is tall enough to stand fully erect in.
