Big Sky Resort : Skiing Summary

Yellowstone Ski Area
Yellowstone Ski Area seen from Lone Peak Summit

Well, if you have read through this entire article, you are either hopelessly confused or have a decent idea of what to expect as far as the skiing and snowboarding goes at Big Sky Resort. If you are confused you can be forgiven by the fact that this article took up 15 full pages in my word processor and because a ski area such as Big Sky Resort is a difficult thing to describe in words only.

Because of the difficulty in describing Big Sky Resort by words, be sure to check out the Big Sky Resort Photo Gallery, where more than 40 “on the snow” pictures have been posted. These pictures should help illustrate the huge variety of excellent skiing and snowboarding that can be found at Big Sky.

But, let me make an attempt to sum things up a bit. First off, Big Sky Resort has by far the widest variety of ski terrain in Montana. In fact, the skiing opportunities at Big Sky Resort are so extensive that I think it would be patently impossible to get bored skiing at Big Sky even over the course of a week.

Big Sky also receives a ton of snow – upwards of around 400 inches a year (less though in the base area). The snow also tends to be lighter and fluffier than what is found out in western Montana, owing due to both the resorts location as well as its elevation. As such, powder skiers will absolutely love Big Sky resort during periods of snow.

And then there is Lone Peak Summit itself. Anyone who appreciates a good view absolutely must make the trip up to the summit – even if you can barely ski. The view from the summit of Lone Peak is truly outstanding and is one of the finest views to be found in Montana. On a clear day, a trip up to the summit of Lone Peak on the tram should be mandatory for anyone skiing at Big Sky for the first time. The time spent getting up to the top and then back down will be well worth it.

To be truthful, when I first arrived at Big Sky Resort, I didn’t think I would like it. I tend to have a little distaste for the big, expensive ski resorts found out west – especially those that have extensive real estate development around it. All too many of these resorts have cookie-cutter runs – seemingly all the same – with very little variety. Indeed, many resorts anymore remind me of real estate development companies that happen to have a ski area, too. Moreover, many of these resorts spend way too much money on their base areas and very little money on actually improving the mountain for great skiing.

Big Sky Resort, though, has avoided these pitfalls. While Big Sky is a destination ski resort in every sense of the word, and the steep price tag and numerous housing developments reflect that, the skiing is, quite simply, phenomenal – and well worth the price of admission. No where else in Montana can you find such a massive variety of ski terrain. And to top it off, the setting of Big Sky is absolutely awesome – with the beautiful summit of Lone Peak just dominating the whole area.
